Flour Blending

Many issues face flour blenders when considering the differing yields from different wheat varieties when milled under different processes.

An example would be where 2 processes would each result in up to 2 grades of flour for each wheat variety. The proportions of the grades in each process are fixed for each variety so for example –

Milling Wheat 1 by Process A gives 50% Flour 1 and 50% Flour 3.
Milling Wheat 1 by Process B gives 90% Flour 2 and 10% Flour 4.

The next challenge is to blend these many grades of flour into several different finished products, themselves each with a unique specification.

The task of optimizing each blended product using up all the different grades of flour created in the milling processes in the appropriate proportions is an interesting and challenging one.

With the benefit of Formats software and application of specific techniques, the method measures the proportions of flour across finished products to provide a least cost solution, rather than assuming fixed proportions of each grade of flour in each individual product.
